The Danish Government proposes in a new Climate-Statement-report that the Danish island of Bornholm, in the Baltic sea, should be made into an energy island by establishing and connecting up to a 2 GW offshore wind-farm by 2030 with connections to Zealand and Poland.

At Port of Roenne, which has been selected as the pre-assemply port in connection with the construction of the largest Danish offshore wind farm at Kriegers Flak (600 MW), we are pleased with the announcement from the government:

“We are pleased that Bornholm has been appointed by the Government to become an energy island, that a 2 GW offshore wind farm is proposed to be located next to Bornholm and the Baltic Sea-region is given political priority, so the climate- and energy ambitions now also apply to the easten part of Denmark and the regions in the Baltic Sea. This means, that all of Denmark will enjoy the effects of employment and local growth, which comes as a result of the construction of offshore wind farms in Denmark, ”says Thomas Bendtsen, CEO of Port of Roenne.

Bornholm as the center of green energy in the Baltic Sea

 

The idea of ​​making Bornholm ‘an Island of green energy’ came to life when Ørsted in November 2019 suggested to place a gigant offshore wind farm next to the island, on the already screened sea-area at ‘Rønne Banke’. At the same time a transformer station was suggested at the island as the logical cable-link between Sweden, Denmark, Germany and Poland, in order to build up a mutually and fruitfully energy- and climate cooperation between the European countries in the Baltic Sea-area.

 

“We are of course really excited about the proposal from the Government. This can have a great impact on both the climate and the business communities of the region. There is no doubt, that Bornholm is ready to be the center of the energy industry in the East. We have built a modern and climate-proof port area of150.000 square meter, specially designed to handle heavy project loads, sush as wind turbine-parts from the offshore wind industry, and where the new quay structures have a carrying capacity that is extremely competitive in the international market of which Port of Roenne plays a key role. This means that we have the right infrastructure available in order to provide the services needed,” says Thomas Bendtsen.

 

Community-based ferry services & Power to X

 

The Danish government also proposed to promote the new Power-to-X technologies. Specifically, which transform the green power into green hydrogen, that can be further refined to fossil free fuels so that we can transport our goods in a more sustainable way in the future.

 

“This proposal can have a great impact on the transport sector and the maritime industry at a whole. For example the Government could choose to integrate the green PtX-solutions as part of the community-based ferry services on Bornholm. It will undoubtedly have a great and beneficial effect on the environment. If this could be connected to research and testing facilities for further development and qualification of the PtX-technologies, then Denmark could seriously become the first mover at this area, ”says Thomas Bendtsen, who believes there can be no doubt about Bornholm being right at the center of the European stakeholders at the Baltic Sea:

 

“From our point of view a stronger trans-European cooperation, focusing on the green energy market at the Baltic Sea Region, is more important than ever. In this collaboration, Bornholm is an obvious geographical epi-center of energy between Sweden, Denmark, Germany and Poland.” says Thomas Bendtsen.

Fact: Kriegers Flak

• Kriegers Flak is located in the Baltic Sea, about 30 miles west of Bornholm, which is approximately equivalent to 3 hours of sailing.
• It consists of 72 SWT-8.4-167 wind turbines.
• They are about 230 meters high and have a total output of 604.8 MW.
• Construction of the wind farm will start in 2020 and when it is completed, it will supply power to around 600,000 Danish households.

 

Fact: Arcadis Ost 1

• Arcadis Ost 1 is scheduled for installation in early June 2022 to end of February 2023
• The project will consist of 27 x V174-9.5 MW offshore wind turbines
• The 27 offshore wind turbines will have a total output capacity of 257 MW
• The project site is located 74 kilometers from Port of Roenne at the island of Bornholm.
• Arcadis Ost 1 will be able to supply 300.000 German households with clean energy

• As a result of the newly built port area from October 2019, the infrastructure at Port of Roenne is attracting attention from the offshore wind industry
• From October 2017 to October 2019, Port of Roenne A/S has built a 150.000 square meters port area, designed specifically to handle extreme weights as required by the offshore wind industry

• The quay is constructed with a lifting capacity at 50 tons per square meter
